It’s a prequel to the first Star Wars movie with few of the already established characters. by the Rebellion into stealing those Death Star plans that become the McGuffin of the first Star Wars movie. The Felicity Jones-led flick concerns a group of scrappy mercenaries who are hired/coaxed/etc. It is a stand-alone spin-off or (making up a word now) “in-between-quel” that takes place just before A New Hope. But if you mention the word “prequel,” most general audiences will immediately associate that with George Lucas’s last three Star Wars films. It’s not a sequel to The Force Awakens that’s for sure. They need to make audiences aware of just what this movie is.

But offering a shot or two of Darth Vader is a convenient solution to Rogue One’s most pressing marketing challenge. And this Gareth Edwards-directed Star Wars stand-alone is almost sure to be a massive hit when it drops on December 15 of this year. And I’m the guy who consistently argues that studio marketing campaigns should hold back the fan-friendly stuff for after the release in a case where the film will already sell itself. I’m the guy who (gently) chastised Walt Disney and Marvel for including Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil War marketing.
